Discussion:
AOL usually works fine... just don't try to leave 'em.

Terminated service with AOL a few months ago. Cancellation agent gives
me the hard sell... tries to get me to keep the account. No no no no
no. Two months later $23.90 charged to my checking account. Call
AOL's cancellation and it takes 1/2 hour with two cancellation agents
(obviously in country of India) to get my refund posted and to close
the account.

One patronizingly tries to explain how I had accepted two months of
free service at the time I cancelled the account. I did not.

The only proven way to prevent billing after service cancelation is to
cancel, then call your bank or credit card company and report the card
lost and ask for a new card to be issued with a new number and ask
that all subsequent attemptee charges be refused - ie not transferred
to the new card.

This will cause a 10-14 day period of inconvenience when you do not
have the card handy to use but it is the only way of preventing AOL
from billing you after cancelation.

The 10-14 day period of no card beats the weeks to months of arguing
with them over cancelations and filing for credits to your card,
especially when you are talking off shore to people who are not
interested in doing that.

These offshore companies are commissioned by the number of accounts
they retain. As such they will do anything to prevent a cancelation -
even when it is underhanded.

AOL will deny this but the evidence points elsewhere.

On the day I cancel, I'm calling my credit card co. and informing them
of that fact and telling them NOT to accept any further charges from
AOL. There are just too many of these stories for it to be a mistake.
